In flight with Lima Lima over Watertown, NY.

During the Fort Frum Centennial Air Show in June 2008, I've had the opportunity to fly with the Lima Lima Flight Team during a practice flight on the Friday before the air show. Fridays are usually the media days and arrivals for the air show. I do love flying a lot but shooting another plane during the flight is what will get me in the back seat! Between a ride in a B-25J and a flight with Lima Lima and an opportunity to do some air-to-air, the choice was not difficult. What I had in mind was to get a formation shot very similar to the one I did at Pease in 2007 with the Yak-52s. With that in mind, Peter (my assistant) and I hooked up with the Lima Lima Flight Team on Friday to see what we could do with the team. At the time, I already knew I wanted to fly in number six in the formation in order to be in the best position to shoot the formation during the flight. My assistant was in number three. Weather that day was pretty hot and humid, unstable too and the pilots had to work hard on the the throttles to keep the planes together. I was all excited to go up with the Lima Lima Flight Team and get some formation shots! Things were going well until we started to do some maneuvers and the heat back there started to give me some sweats! I wish I could have the rear canopy opened so I would not have to shoot through the canopy and avoid reflections. It was hard at some points to keep focused on the planes next to us when we were pulling 3.5+ G. After an hour over Watertown, we made it back to Fort Drum all safe and sound on the ground.

Special thanks to J.Rippinger and G.Donovan for taking us up there!
